We all know that the light from the everyday devices is bad for our health, but how much? Today will be talking about the smartphones and their impact on our health.
Studies suggest that 60% of people spend more than 6 hours a day in front of a digital device.
They emit a bright blue light so is possible for us to read what’s displaying on the screen, this process happens during the most brightest points of the day.
As the day passes the light doesn’t adjust so the brightness stays the same, this happens to all device like the lap-top, TV and other devices as well.
What actually happens is this light mimics the brightness of the sun and confuses your brain to think is a day light. This in turn stops your brain from releasing melatonin, which is the hormone that helps you fall asleep. This is why experts are suggesting to turn all the lights at least 2 hours before going to bad.
This hormone is realized by a tiny organ that is located in your brain and is called the pineal gland. It is activated couple of hours before sleeping. The science of why the blue light emitted by mobile devices keeps people awake has led to the discovery of a photoreceptor called Melanopsin.
Though we’ve long been familiar with the various cones and rods that construct our vision, the Melan opsin was discovered just recently In retinal ganglion cells, they are sensitive to blue light. Experts confirmed that an average person has trouble falling asleep when using mobile devices.
The teenagers are much more vulnerable then the adult when comes to this situation. The reason for that is circadian rhythm naturally shifts during adolescence, causing teenagers to be more awake in a night time.
BLUE LIGHT ISN’T THE ONLY CONCERN
Dr. Martin Blank from the Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics at Colombia University has joined a group of scientists from around the world who are making an international appeal to the United Nations regarding the dangers associated with various electromagnetic emitting devices, like cellphones and WiFi.
Other than the sleep disorder, there are many more serious issues caused by this particular problem. As we mentioned the younger population is more effected by this situation, it is important to mention that child’s brain absorbs up to four times as much radiation as an average adult. And the frightening fact is that children are over occupied with these modern devices.
The time that sometimes we spend on our devices screen is just too much, In China this is actually considered clinical disorder. Due to this occurrence, rehabilitation centers had been established for people who are just addicted from the screen.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
First and most importantly, limit the time that you’ve been spending on the screen, especially before going to bed. As a suggestion it is much better to read a book before bed.
You can also download an app called f.lux, which adjusts the colour of your computer’s display to the time of day — warm at night and brighter during the day — and cuts the blue light being emitted. There are similar apps for phones as well. All of us here at CE use these apps and have really noticed an improvement in our sleep quality.
