You often find yourself tossing and turning around in your bed to find the best sleeping position. Do you feel more comfortable sleeping on the stomach? Or is resting on the back better? Experts have determined the proper side for you.
Dr. John Douillard started exploring and researching the Ayurveda, an alternative Indian medicine, in order to explain and back up his opinion that sleeping on the left side of your body may give you the proper rest you need. Here are some of the reasons why is sleeping on the left side, supposedly, the best for you.
- Lymph draining
Biggest part of the lymphatic system is situated on the left side of the body, so lymphatic congestion occurs mainly on this side. By sleeping on your left side, you allow gravity to take away some of the lymph drainage pressure from the spleen and the heart, located also on this side of the body.
- Spine and breathing
As explained by Joint Essential, sleeping on your side will cause the least harm to the spine. If you sleep on the back, you`ll put too much pressure on the hips and the upper back, leaving the lower back in a suspended state. If you sleep on the stomach, you will strain the neck and the lower back. Sleeping on the side provides the maximum air flow to your lungs.
According to Dr. Douillard, sleeping on the left side will allow the food to be processed faster- food can travel easily from the small to the large intestine, into the descending colon. He also recommends resting for 10-15 minutes on you left side after a meal, to improve digestion and prevent “food coma”.
All of this indicates that sleeping on the left side is the best choice.
But the sleep professional, Dr. Steven Park, does not agree completely- he says that if you forcefully try to change the sleeping position, things will be worse because you`ll break the sleeping habits you have.
Nonetheless, if you still can`t find the right sleeping position, try sleeping on your left side and tell us how it worked out.
