These 9 Common Habits Can Really Damage Your Kidneys!

One of the most important body organs are kidneys, since their function is to get rid of toxins and waste from our body through urine. Therefore, they regulate the levels of phosphate and calcium.

They also regulate our blood pressure because they produce crucial hormones that are important for this function. They regulate the formation of red blood cells, which are responsible to carry nutrients and oxygen throughout the entire body.

That is why it is very important to support their proper function. If their function is somehow obstructed, you can experience certain symptoms such as: bad breath, vomiting, itchy skin, changed urine in quality and color, dizziness, anemia, breathing issues, tiredness, sudden pain or you will feel cold most of the time.

If you experience some of these symptoms, you have to visit your doctor and inspect the situation. Kidney problems sometimes happen as a result of many factors. However, some of the following habits can contribute to their damage:

1. Insufficient Water Intake

Water deficiency can cause significant kidney damage, because blood will become very concentrated and this will reduce blood flow to the kidneys. This will impede the kidneys to eliminate waste and toxins from your body and they will accumulate inside, which will increase the number of health problems and diseases. It is recommended to drink at least 10 to 12 glasses of water daily. However, you should not drink excessive amount of water as well.

2. Not going to the bathroom immediately

This is the most common problem that can lead to kidney failure. The reason is because the urine stays in the bladder for longer period of time, which leads to multiplication of bacteria. These dangerous bacteria will cause kidney and infections of the urinary tract. What’s more, if you retain the urine you will apply pressure to the kidneys, which can cause renal failure and urinary incontinence. That is why you should immediately go the bathroom once you feel the need.

3. Cigarettes

This is a detrimental habit, that will cause damage to all body organs and the kidneys are not an exception. Different studies discovered a connection between kidney disease and smoking. The American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) said that smoking is actually the main cause for ESRD (end-stage renal disease).

Smoking will raise heart rate and blood pressure, narrow the blood vessels and decrease the blood flow in the kidneys. Additionally, it worsens kidney issues and accelerates the loss of their function.

4. High Protein Diet

Eating a lot of proteins will increase the risk of kidney disease, because their function is to metabolize and eliminate toxic waste from the entire body and they are actually by-products of the protein digestion.

Consuming a lot of protein will chronically increase hyperfiltration and the glomerular pressure, which will raise the metabolic load of kidneys and cause kidney problems. That is why you should reduce the intake of red meat. If you already have kidney problems you should not eat red meat at all.

5. High Salt Intake

If you consume a lot of salt on a regular basis you can damage your kidneys in different ways.

Our kidneys are able to metabolize even 95% of the sodium which is consumed by food. When you consume excessive amounts of sodium, they have to work a lot harder in order to excrete it, which means their function is decreased and our body will retain water and we all know that water retention can raise the risk of kidney disease and the raise the blood pressure as well.

Different studies say that consumption a lot of salt can increase the urinary protein amount that can cause development of kidney disease. Remember, that the excess salt can harm your body and mostly the kidneys.

6. Insufficient Sleep

Many people ignore that rest and sleep are very important. However, the ideal sleep would last for 6- 8 hours. Our organ tissues are able to renew during sleep time, which means that if you have lack of sleep, all these processes will stop and can cause damage to the body organs.

It is proven that if you do not get proper sleep you can clog your arteries and raise blood pressure and in the end develop certain kidney diseases. That is why you have to find ideal balance between sleep and work, leisure and rest, because this can have a great influence over your entire health.

7. Constant Analgesics use

Many people use analgesics, painkillers and medications to reduce inflammation, pain and cure different problems. However, all these medications will damage the kidneys and the other body organs as well.

Different researchers discovered that consuming excessive number of analgesics may obstruct the function of kidneys and reduce the blood flow that goes to the kidneys. That is why long use of all these drugs will cause kidney diseases, including interstitial nephritis and acute kidney injury. Remember that you should consult with your doctor before you start using any drugs. Consume analgesics only for a short period of time, because they can cause serious kidney damage.

8. A Lot of Caffeine

Consuming a lot of caffeine can increase blood pressure and this can cause kidney damage. One study that was published in 2002 by the Kidney International discovered that caffeine consumption is directly related to kidney stones, because caffeine can raise the excretion of calcium in the urine.

However, moderate consumption of tea or coffee cannot cause any danger, but you should drink less chocolate, energy drinks, cocoa, medications and soft drinks.

9. A Lot of Alcohol

It is a toxin that causes stress on the liver and kidneys and drinking excessive amounts can cause kidney damage. Drinking a lot of it will cause storage of the uric acid in renal tubules and this will cause tubular obstruction that raises the risk of kidney failure.

Alcohol dehydrates your body and it also destroys the normal function of your kidneys. The recommended dosage of alcohol in one day is 1 glass for elder people and 2 for men.
