When buying a product, when you see “Eco-friendly” on the label, automatically you get the impression that that is better for the environment and your health. That was the case with the light bulbs, we almost never see the old fashion bulb because they are replaced with Eco-friendly energy saving light bulbs.
But we have some bad new about this low-cost energy saving, Eco-friendly light bulbs.
Research came to the shocking discovery that made the US Environmental Protection Agency come with an emergency protocol regarding the use of the energy saving light bulbs. The reason being is the discovery that in a case of breakage these light bulbs release toxic gas.
In case you break one of these bulbs indoors, it releases 20 times more mercury in the air than the maximum allowed concentration.
This discovery has been confirmed by a group of researchers at the Fraunhofer Wilhelm Klauditz Institute who did a research for the needs of the German’s Federal Environment Agency.
Energy-saving light bulbs can cause:
- Cluster headaches
- Poor concentration
Energy-saving bulbs contain mercury
Excessive exposure to mercury causes tremors, anxiety, insomnia, memory loss, headaches, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer, also affects your brain, nervous system, liver, kidneys cardiovascular, immune and reproductive system. It is especially dangerous for small children and expecting moms.
Energy-saving bulbs can cause cancer
According to Peter Braun’s study conducted at Berlin Germany’s Alab Laboratory found the following dangerous carcinogens in these light bulbs:
Phenol – mildly toxic, often used in chemical manufacture.
Naphthalene – commonly used in mothballs, also used as a raw material in chemical manufacture.
Styrene – petroleum byproduct.
Energy-saving bulbs emit UV rays
The Eco-friendly light bulbs have traces of UV-C radiation and also emit UV-B. UV rays are very dangerous for your skin and your vision, they may cause the development of cancer. On the other hand, UV radiation attacks the immune system and damages skin to the point where the skin can no longer produce the vitamin D3.
So you may pay less in money, but the price you pay with your health is too big.
Who knew that breaking one of these is the worst thing that can happen to a household.
The official EPA Broken Bulb Clean-Up Procedure
- Evacuate everybody from the room.
- Let some fresh air in by opening a window or a door.
- Turn off the central air heating/conditioning system.
To clean the broken light bulb peaces, you need the following items make the job easier:
- Stiff paper/Cardboard
- Sticky tape
- Disposable wet wipes (Use these for hard surfaces only)
- A glass jar with a lid or sealable plastic bag
You must know that vacuuming will spread mercury even more, so you NEVER vacuum the bulb peaces.
Start the clean up by first scooping the glass pieces. With the sticky tape, you’ll get the tiniest bits and powder. Don’t throw the broken glass in the bin, discard them in the jar or bag.
Don’t keep the peaces inside, dispose of the immediately, throw them in a trash outside. Inform yourself, because some localities require that fluorescent bulbs are disposed of in a recycling center, regardless of their state broken or not.
